A BORDERS swimming pool has closed to allow staff to assess the damage caused by a deliberate fire last weekend.

Emergency services were called to Peebles Swimming Baths on Port Brae around 3am on Sunday morning June 19 2022 following the report of a fire.

Detectives believe that the incident was linked to a fire in a bin in Peebles High Street earlier that morning and are appealing for witnesses.

A Live Borders statement reads: “There was a fire incident at Peebles Swimming Pool in the early morning on Sunday 19 June.

“The Pool is currently closed while we assess the damage.

“Members and swimmers are able to access our other pools while Peebles is closed.

“Please, for your own safety, can members of the public not visit the site, or touch/remove any debris.

“We thank you for your understanding and apologise for any inconvenience. We will update as soon as we have further news.”

Detective Inspector Ben Leathes, of Police Scotland’s CID, said: “Thankfully no one has been injured as a result of these fires.

“Although this happened in the early hours of the morning, we are appealing to anyone who may have any information to come forward and speak to police.

“I would ask if you were in the area at the time or noticed anyone acting suspiciously that you get in touch with officers.”

Police can be contacted by calling 101 and quoting incident number 0633 of Sunday, 19 June, 2022.
