TEVIOTDALE Harrier Alastair Walker (66) has won two medals at the World Masters Athletics tournament in Tampere.

The competition for Over35s took place between from June 29 to July 10 2022

On Saturday July 2 Walker, who has been setting M65 records all season, set British and European bests at 5000m in 16:43.44 winning by an incredible 200 metres and 40 seconds.

His incredible time would have also won medals in the M50 and M55 events.

Then on Friday July 8 in the 10k race he finished in 34m 44s and incredible 5m 42s ahead of Christian Gimenez from France and 5m 54s ahead of Lucien Heyde from Belgium.

Walker gave up competitive running for 20 years but returned to compete in Masters events and now also holds world records at 10k, 5k, and 3k categories.

Now retired Alistair was formerly employed at Hawick’s Lyle and Scott textile factory for over 30 years and later at Galashiels logistics firm Sykes Global Services.

He told ITV Borders: “I had a feeling I would win but to do it was very satisfying. In the 5k I was two and a half minutes clear and in the 10k on Friday night I was five minutes clear so I knew fairly early on that I was going to win.”
