AN earlier bin collection time was being trialled in a Borders town this week in response to extreme hot weather warnings.

The time change was being made in a bid to protect refuse staff from the rising temperatures.

A spokesperson for Scottish Borders Council said: “Due to the extreme heat weather warnings, we’re trialling an earlier waste collection service in Hawick to support our staff.”

Residents are being asked to ensure that bins be presented by 6am on Tuesday (July 19) rather than the usual 7am.

The move comes after an amber weather warning for extreme heat issued by the Met Office from Monday morning to 11.59pm on Tuesday.
