A 20-YEAR-OLD woman who coughed at police and spat in an officer's face during the COVID lockdown has been ordered to be of good behaviour at Jedburgh Sheriff Court.

Chantelle McCourt pleaded guilty to two charges of assault and also breaching her bail conditions by being in the wrong property during lockdown.

The court heard how at 10 past eight in the evening of May 8, 2020, police officers attended at a property in Hawick's Mansfield Gardens after receiving a complaint about loud music.

Fiona Hamilton, prosecuting, told a previous hearing: "They were met by the accused who was clearly intoxicated.

"They asked her if she had any COVID symptoms and she coughed in the direction of police officers before swearing at them saying she did not care about Coronavirus."

She explained she had been staying at the property after falling out with her sister in Glasgow.

McCourt walked towards a constable and coughed twice at him covering his face in spittle and she was arrested.

She struggled with officers and kicked a constable on the leg.

McCourt, now living in Glasgow, was released on bail on a curfew to stay at her father's address but was not there when police visited on May 8 and was found at her sister's address the next day.

Sheriff Peter Paterson deferred sentence on McCourt until October 10 for good behaviour.
