A BORDERS man who admitted striking a man over the head with a wheel brace has been placed on a night time curfew for the next six months.

Fifty-three-year-old Thomas Simpson, of Duns, pleaded guilty to charges of assault to severe injury and possession of an offensive weapon in September 2020.

Jedburgh Sheriff Court said he confronted the man in the town's Market Square about derogatory comments about his daughter on social media.

Defence lawyer Liam Alexander said: "He tells me his daughter had been receiving unpleasant messages. This was not a planned incident and had gone to the shops and came across the man and had a word with him like any father would do. But emotions got the better of him and accepts his behaviour was unacceptable."

The Restriction of Liberty Order will run from 7pm to 7am and is an alternative to custody.
