VIOLENCE against school employees by pupils in the Borders is on the up, figures revealed by a Freedom of Information (FOI) request suggest.

The region’s local authority recently updated its FOI archive.

A request at the end of June asked Scottish Borders Council (SBC) how many forms recording incidences of violence against employees by pupils were filled out in the past academic year.

According SBC, 868 forms were filled out.

That is up by more than 250 when compared to the last full academic year before the coronavirus pandemic – 2018-2019.

Teachers and pupils worked from home for periods while lockdown restrictions were in place.

The council was also asked to confirm how many forms about incidences of violence between pupils were completed in the past academic year.

That number stands at 267, up from the 152 forms filled out in 2018-19, according to the council’s response.
