A GROUP of rugby playing pals from the Borders are setting off on Wednesday night aiming to complete a three-peak challenge by climbing the highest peaks in Scotland, England and Wales in 24-hours to raise money for Evie’s Batten Journey.

Nick Beavon and his father Mark, Callum Anderson, Rory Monks, Gary Fraser Alec Jessop and Nick Whiteley will start at the foot of Mount Snowdon in Wales at 6pm on Thursday night and if everything goes to plan, they will climb and descend the 1,085 meters in around four hours.

The group then travel to Scafell Pike in the Lake District and tackle the 978 meters before taking on Ben Nevis (1,344m)

Over the course of 24-hours, the gang will trek around 26 miles and ascend to a total height of almost 3,000m.

This is a serious and tough challenge which requires a good level of fitness, as well as plenty of grit and determination.

Nick (35) said: “I had the idea and messaged my pals on WhatsApp and a number agreed. I chose Evie’s Batten Journey because it’s such a worthy cause and I played rugby with her dad Wayne.

“We’ve been training for 16-weeks for the challenge and Karl Outhwaite from the Borders Search and Rescue has helped us with his expertise. Unfortunately, he picked up an injury and won’t make it but he is very much part of the team.

“I’d like to thank Dale Robertson for donating the use of his bus and Ian Fraser, Gary’s dad who will be driving it.

“I’ve checked the weather and we should be fine for Snowdon which we hope to do in four hours and Scafell Pike which we hope to do in three and a half hours.

“Ben Nevis could be harder, and we’ve estimated four and a half hours.

“But we are all fit and healthy and mostly in our mid 30s so hopefully everything will go to plan.

“I had initially estimated making around £500 but even before we leave, we are almost at £1,500.”

All money raised will go to the Evie’s Batten Journey charity on behalf of nine-year-old Evie Mitchell from Melrose who has been diagnosed with the life limiting condition Battens CLN5.
