TEMPORARY traffic lights will be in place on a Borders bridge across a two-week period, according to road officials.

Replacement parapet works are set to take place at Earlston bridge on the A68 from Monday (September 12) until Friday, September 23.

Parapets, low protective barriers either side of a cycleway, are used to protect cyclists.

The replacement works will ensure the standard parapet height required for the cycleway is maintained across the bridge, as well as providing better aesthetics and increasing road safety, according to a BEAR Scotland spokesperson.

During the parapet replacement programme, the road will be restricted to a single lane with temporary traffic lights.

Works will take place during the day from Monday to Friday, September 23, including weekends, with the temporary lights remaining in place out with this time period.

Chris Tracey, BEAR Scotland’s south east unit bridges manager, said: “These parapet replacement works are required to maintain the integrity of the bridge and to safeguard the cyclists using the structure.

“It is essential for the safety of the workforce and road users that we use lane closures while the works are being carried out.

“We thank motorists and the local community in advance for their patience and understanding.”
