COMMUNITY gardens around Melrose will now be tributes to the late Queen Elizabeth II.

Greener Melrose spent the summer with volunteers creating the 'jewels around the Eildons' to mark the Queen's platinum jubilee.

However, since the Queen's passing the gardens will be a tribute to her.

The jewels around the Eildons project was an opportunity to engage young people and share with them the joy of gardening and growing their own vegetables.

Donald McPhillimy, one of the project organisers, said: “We would love to see how the vegetables planted into their pots in Gibson Park have grown over the summer months.

"Even better if they have been converted into healthy stews and salads."

And following on from the jewels of the Eildons project, Greener Melrose will host an Apple Day at the community orchard at Leaderfoot.

The event will include apple picking and pressing, guided walks around the Drygrange community site, fire, and musical entertainment.

Guests are asked to bring their own empty containers if they want to press the apples they collect.

The Greener Melrose Apple Day will take place on Saturday, September 24 from 11am-3pm.

Parking is on the old A68, a short walk down to the site which is signposted to Grange Hall. All welcome!
