MOTORCYCLE safety is being highlighted this weekend in the Lothians and Scottish Borders as part of an operation promoting and encouraging safe riding.

Operation Dogma uses unmarked motorcycles with cameras and officers will be patrolling on Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 September on popular routes used by bikers.

This will involve monitoring all road users, but there will be a focus on motorcycles with the aim of working to reduce injuries and deaths on the roads.

So far Operation Dogma has dealt with a number of incidents involving speeding and driving habits, such as overtaking manoeuvres. Advice has also been given on the size of number plates.

Inspector Michelle Burns said: “Unmarked motorcycles with cameras are a useful part of the tools available to road policing officers with the aim of making Scotland’s roads safer.

“We do see an increase in motorcyclist enjoying the better weather during the summer months but even when the autumnal weather comes along riders are out and about and we want them to enjoy favourable riding conditions safely.

“Sadly we continue to see motorcyclists seriously injured and even killed in accidents on our roads and the devastation that crashes can cause, not just to road users, but to the family and friends of those involved.

“Our aim is to engage with and offer advice to motorcyclists and this includes stopping at popular rendezvous locations to chat with riders, provide advice and help with any issues.

“But Operation Dogma also involves enforcement work and will not hesitate to deal with any issues that come up, regardless of the vehicle involved, as we aim to reduce the number of incidents and help make our roads safer for everyone.”
