THE Regency Walled Gardens at Abbotsford, the home of Sir Walter Scott, are one of eight historic house gardens shortlisted for the Historic Houses Garden of the Year award 2022.

The winner of the award is decided by popular vote and voting is open on the Historic Houses website until Friday 30th September 2022.

The Historic Houses Garden of the Year Award has been running since 1984 to celebrate Britain's historic parks and gardens.

The competition is run in conjunction with Christie's auction house. This sought-after title can considerably boost visitor numbers for the winning garden.

Abbotsford’s Regency Walled Gardens are made up of a series of three outdoor ‘rooms’ designed by Sir Walter Scott. Including the popular Kitchen Garden which frames the castle-like East façade of the house and a new mindfulness garden which opened this year.

This mindfulness area offers a peaceful, enclosed place to sit within the gardens and includes a new water feature.

Tim Owen, Head Gardener at Abbotsford, said: “We’re delighted to have been shortlisted for the Historic Houses Garden of the Year Award. Sir Walter Scott’s Regency Walled Gardens are a rare surviving example of a Regency Garden layout, created as a series of outdoor ‘rooms’ and enjoyed by thousands of visitors every year.

“The gardens today are a testament to the hard work of our small staff team and dedicated volunteers. If you’ve ever enjoyed a visit to the gardens at Abbotsford, we’d appreciate your support in the last week of voting. Please vote for Abbotsford on the Historic Houses website.”

Voting is open until Friday 30th September 2022 on the Historic Houses website, historichouses.org.
