A COMMUNITY space could be created as part of a Borders development project.

Tweedbank residents are being asked to share their views on a proposal to create a Neighbourhood Centre at the heart of the Lowood Estate development.

The Neighbourhood Centre would be a focal point for the community, visitors and tourists and would be located around the heart of the Estate.

According to the proposals the centre would reflect the needs of the local community in the services provided.

Locals are asked to have their say on what they think the centre should provide the community and what benefits they want to see come into the local area.

Councillor Simon Mountford, executive member for estate management and planning, said: “The creation of a Neighbourhood Centre has always been at the heart of the council’s vision for the Tweedbank extension. It is most important that the Centre reflects the needs of local residents in order to enhance their lifestyle and wellbeing.

“It will act as the focal point of the wider Tweedbank area and have the potential to incorporate a wide range of commercial, leisure and social uses."

Facilities at the Neighbourhood centre could include a local shop, play space, café, nursery or flexible workspaces.

The aim is that the centre would cater to both the requirements of the local community but also offer opportunities to capitalise on growing tourism in the area due to its proximity to Tweedbank rail station.

Mr Mountford added: “This initial consultation is crucial to helping us to understand the needs of the local community and how we, as a Council, can meet those requirements and improve the local area.

"It will also help to inform the design process, so I would encourage as many people as possible from Tweedbank and the surrounding area to engage in the process and to share their views, thereby contributing towards the final design of this vital community facility.”

An in-person event will also take place on Monday, October 27 between 10am and 2pm at Tweedbank Community Centre where locals can share their views on the proposals. This event will be in conjunction with the council's consultation on a 'Dutch-style' care village in Tweedbank.

The online consultation will be available from Thursday, October 20 until Sunday, November 13 and can be accessed at: www.scotborders.gov.uk/tweedbankneighbourhoodcentre
