THE inaugural UCI Cycling World Championships will be hosted in Glasgow and across Scotland, including Glentress in the Scottish Borders, from August 3-13 2023,

It will be the single biggest cycling event in history, bringing together 13 existing UCI World Championships into one mega event.

Organisers are looking for more than 4000 volunteers from throughout the country to support the event and are encouraging people across the region to sign-up and play a part.

The volunteers will make a critical contribution, helping to create similarly treasured experiences of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.

One of the first to sign up was Peebles woman Fiona Reddick (55) and she is encouraging others to do likewise.

Fiona is likely to be a well known face to spectators and competitor alike having marshalled at many cycling events in the region in the past.

She said: “I understand that they are looking for many volunteers in a variety of roles and I would encourage others to sign up and take part. It’s very rewarding and you get to meet people from all over the world.

“I’ve been a marshal at a lot of local and international events including the Enduro World Series which involves crowd control and it’s all about the safety of riders and spectators. You have to engage with the crowd but also be firm on occasions.

“It can be a long day and of course the Scottish weather can be unpredictable but if you are dressed property than you’ll be fine.

“But there will be lots of different roles so anyone interested should log onto the website and choose something that suits them.

“This will be a huge event and it will be great to be involved in it. There is always a nice vibe and a nice atmosphere and of course the Tweed Valley is beautiful. Anytime I’ve volunteered in the past I feel energised, positive and upbeat when it’s over.

“And you get to see old friends and make new ones.”
