CALLS have been made to standardise the speed limit on a “dangerous” Borders road.

Galashiels community councillor John Birnie raised the issue on the B6374 from Lowood Bridge to Langlee at a meeting on Wednesday.

Mr Birnie said that the speed limit changes four times during a stretch of around one mile.

“You come on the Lowood Bridge at 40mph, 100 yards on it’s 60mph, 200 yards on it’s 30mph, then it’s 20mph,” he said. “You’ve got four speed limits on the section of the road from the C77 to Lowood Bridge.

“Can we have that road standardised to 40mph because that’s just so dangerous coming down through Lowood Bridge?”

Scottish Borders Council leader Euan Jardine said the matter was raised last year but there had been “no movement”.

Mr Birnie added: “It’s only a matter of a mile, surely it should be standardised to one speed limit.”

In December, plans to permanently set 20mph speed limits across towns and villages in the Borders were approved by councillors.

The proposals also included a number of 30mph and 40mph ‘buffer zones’.
