PUPILS from Reston Primary School in the Scottish Borders have been named as environmental charity Keep Scotland Beautiful’s Clean Up Scotland Heroes of the Month for their fantastic stickers which encourage bin use in the school.
The pupils took part in the competition, organized by Grantshouse Community Council and the school, to design a sticker for bins to deter littering.
Depending on their age and stage, the pupils coloured in a poster label or designed their own posters.

The winning entries were chosen by Catherine Cunnane of Grantshouse Community Council and Alice Fisher from Sea the Change. Catherine Cunnane also happens to be a mum of a Reston Primary School pupil who came up with the idea for the competition.
The winning sticker from the nursery-aged pupils showed pieces of litter urging pupils to bin their rubbish.
The winning sticker from the primary school category encouraged pupils to not be a litterbug. Entries were submitted by pupils across the school, and other entries included depictions of a sad world and a hungry litter monster!
The school was presented with the award, and a litter picking kit donated by Helping Hand Environmental, by Barry Fisher, CEO of Keep Scotland Beautiful, on 31 October 2022 at a celebration event in the Scottish Borders Council HQ.

Jill Horsburgh, Reston Primary School Head Teacher said, “This was a meaningful, hands-on learning experience for all the children who attend Reston Nursery and Primary School. The competition reinforced the important message about Keeping Scotland, in particular Berwickshire, Beautiful.
“Thank you to Grantshouse Community Council, Trevor Warne and Cllr Anderson for inviting us to share our good work. We are all wearing our Keep Berwickshire Tidy badges which were presented to us by Mr Warne and Mrs Cunnane.”
Barry Fisher, CEO of Keep Scotland Beautiful, who also presented certificates of achievement to 16 community groups who took part in either the national Beautiful Scotland or It’s Your Neighbourhood initiatives this year, commented, “It is always inspiring to hear about young people and communities who are committed to taking action for our environment. I would like to congratulate all the pupils of Reston Primary School, especially the winning pupils, for their creative designs as these posters will remind their classmates to bin their litter and protect our planet.
