A WELL-KNOWN health care assistant who has been serving the public for more than 30 years in Melrose has retired.

Frances Cowan, who is originally from Peebles, started at the chemist shop in Market Square in 1989 when it was known as Diane Manzi’s.

And she remained when it was taken over by Boots, becoming the face of the shop, serving the non pharmacy customers.

But all good things come to an end and Frances is looking forward to not setting her alarm clock every night and spending time with her grandchildren.

On Friday, her colleagues presented her with a bunch of flowers and a sash which she wore throughout the day.

A future meal out is also being arranged.

Frances said: “I can’t believe it’s been more than 30 years. Time has flown by and I’ve seen so many change over the years.

“But I’ve really enjoyed working here. Most people are very friendly but I’ve got to that age and I think this is the time to go.

“I plan to get up when I want to and do what I like. I’m a granny so I will be able to spend more time with my granddaughters Eva Lucy and Quinn.

“I enjoy knitting and reading books and my husband, Keith, likes walking so hopefully he won’t get under my feet.

“But I will miss it. I’d like to thank all the customers. I’ve enjoyed meeting them and sharing pleasantries and it’s always nice to have a chat. And all my colleagues are really nice to work with.

“I will miss them all and will definitely be popping in to see them.”

Pharmacist Kay Darling added: “We will all miss Frances who has looked after the front of the shop for many years.

"Everyone in Melrose knows her and she gets on well with all our customers.

"The place really won’t be the same without her and all her colleagues wish her well for the future."
