GALASHIELS is the United Kingdom’s second happiest place to live, according to a survey.

The town scored well on the friendliness and politeness of its locals in this year’s edition of Rightmove’s Happy at Home study.

More than 21,000 people were asked how they felt about where they lived, with St Ives in Cornwall beating Galashiels to top spot.

Residents scored their areas on factors such as community spirit, access to green spaces, and cultural activities.

Alice Brown, a valuer at estate agents Rettie & Co Borders, said: “Steeped in history, Galashiels has a wide variety of housing from classic period properties to new builds, offering something for every type of buyer.

“In terms of entertainment, a variety of amenities are on the doorstep, including a cinema, gyms, a swimming pool, supermarkets, independent shops, cafes, a retail park, restaurants and well-regarded schools.

“The recently-established Heartland Market brings together the town and local businesses.”

Galashiels also had the most affordable house prices out of all the areas that made the top ten, with the average asking price at £153,546.

Two other Scottish areas also ranked among this year’s top 10 happiest places to live - Perth and Stirling.
