LAST night, (Wednesday December 7 2022)  after a two year absence, there was an in-person lighting ceremony of The Difference Tree of Light at the Borders General Hospital.

The ceremony began with Karen Hamilton, NHS Borders Chair and Chair of the Difference Board of Trustees, welcoming everyone and inviting Pat Johnson from the Crafty Dafties to push the button for the switch-on.

The NHS Borders Health in Harmony choir then led some carols and showcased their harmonising talents with Ding Dong Merrily on High.

Refreshments were served in the Tryst to round off the ceremony.

Karen Hamilton said: “Thank you to everyone who attended the lighting ceremony last night. We were delighted to be back in person after two years of being unable to gather. A special thank you to Five Star Taxis who generously gifted this year’s tree and the Crafty Dafties who have handmade the decorations being provided with each dedication made this year.”

The Difference Fundraising Manager Karen Wilson said “Organising the tree at the BGH and its lighting ceremony as part of our Tree of Light campaign is one of the highlights of our year. It was extra special to be able to return to doing this in person and to hear the choir sing so beautifully.

She added: “The light dedications we receive are very moving but the tree at the BGH is also about spreading some festive cheer. We hope it brings a smile to staff and to anyone using NHS Borders services over the festive period.”

The tree is lit, but there is still time to make a dedication on the charity’s virtual Tree of Light where a photo and dedication message can be posted. This year each dedication will also receive a special handmade decoration (while stocks last), thanks to Galashiels crafting group “Crafty Dafties”, which you can hang on your tree or gift to the person your dedication honours.
