POLICE in the Scottish Borders have been cracking down on drink and drug driving in the region ahead of the festive season.

After a report of erratic driving in Hawick, an Audi was stopped and the driver was found smelling of cannabis.

Border Telegraph:

Following a DrugWipe test the driver was found to be under the influence of cannabis and cocaine and has been charged with driving whilst impaired and drug possession.

In addition Roads Policing officers from Galashiels attended a collision on the Ravenswood Roundabout on A68 and found the driver to be under the influence of alcohol.

Border Telegraph:

Officers say that driving with drugs or alcohol in your system is an unnecessary risk.

Your chances of being involved in an accident are increased.

Not only do you put yourself at risk of harm, but other road users like cyclists, pedestrians and horse riders.

You risk a driving ban and penalty points on your licence, a fine of up to £5,000 and/or up to 6 months in prison and a criminal record, which may affect your job, education or ability to enter some countries, losing a place at university or college or causing death to yourself and others.
