THE Bomb Squad were called out to Linkim Beach near Eyemouth this morning Tuesday January 11 2023 following reports of a suspicious item.

Local coastguard teams were first on the scene after the alarm was raised on Monday.

The item was photographed but due to rising tide a decision was made to leave it in situ until this morning and at that time the item was found to be a gas cylinder which was very similar to some WW2 ordnance.

The cylinder was trapped under a rock so the top was removed to prevent any further call outs.

A spokesperson for the Eyemouth Coastguard said: “The team was tasked to locate possible unexploded ordinance on Linkim beach after a member of the public reported finding an object that was potentially ordnance.

“The item was quickly locate and photographs where taken and sent to the (British Army's) Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team for analysis.

“The EOD assessment decided the item required further investigation by them, but due to the raising tide the decision was made this would be done the next morning at the low tide.

“Eyemouth coastguard remained on scene until midnight and then stood down to return in the morning.

“The team returned at 0830 this morning (Tuesday January 10 2023) along with Berwick Coastguard Rescue Team and two members from the British Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal team.

“The EOD team examined the item and confirmed coastguard suspicions that the item was actually a gas cylinder but was very similar to some WW2 ordnance.

“The EOD team removed the top of the cylinder to prevent further callouts, as it was stuck under a large rock and couldn't be removed in its entirety.”

The area has now been deemed safe.
