A YEAR after Russia invaded Ukraine, more refugees have been welcomed to the Borders.

According to the latest figures, there are 125 Ukrainian people in 53 hosted homes across the region, 124 in hotels and 71 have moved to “alternative independent accommodation”.

Last Friday marked one year since the start of the war.

And Tweeddale East councillor Julie Pirone called on people to light a candle and pray for those who are suffering.

In addition from that day, Scottish Borders Council has flown the Ukrainian flag at its headquarters in Newtown St Boswells and lit the tower yellow and blue.

Ms Pirone said: “We have seen arrivals pick up in the last few weeks. I want to pay tribute and thank the 53 host families across the Scottish Borders who have opened their homes and their hearts to our Ukrainian friends.

“We want all Ukrainians in our communities to know we are thinking of them.”
