THROWING litter down is a selfish act which damages the environment, habitats and wildlife.

That’s the warning from Dumfriesshire, Clydesdale and Tweeddale MP David Mundell, who is backing Spring Clean campaigns being spearheaded by Keep Britain Tidy and Keep Scotland Beautiful.

He has repeated his long-held concern about the volume of rubbish and fly-tipping incidents at roadsides and other spaces across his constituency.

During an anti-litter drive launch at Westminster, Mr Mundell highlighted the work of volunteer community clean-up groups in his area who were making a difference and supplementing the efforts of local authorities and other agencies.

He said: “There is a perception that litter has become an even greater problem in recent times and this has been reflected in feedback I’ve received from constituents, some of whom are particularly concerned by the unacceptable state of many of our roadsides and open spaces.

“Keeping our environment clean and tidy is not only important for local people but also the visitors who support our region’s increasingly important service and tourism sectors.”

Mr Mundell will be meeting local litter clearance activists during Spring Clean Month, which lasts to April 17.

He praised volunteer litter-pickers and expressed the hope the ‘selfish culture’ and ‘actions of an unthinking minority’ who irresponsibly discarded litter could be reduced and reversed over time.
