FIVE windows in the annexe building (the old Grammar School building) of Melrose Primary School were smashed over last weekend.

Two classrooms have significant broken glass and shards of glass sprayed around the room and over window sills, chairs, some of which have fabric covers, children's work, and in pencil containers and trays.

Litter including broken bottles, was discarded in the outdoor Early Learning Centre and at the back of the annexe building.

Janitorial staff are working hard to ensure all glass is cleared and disposed off so that the teaching areas will be safe for the children returning to school next Monday April 17.

Staff at the school now asking parents of teenagers, who frequent the grounds during holidays and after school hours, to explain the impact the way these areas are left after use has for younger children.

The request was made in an email to parents which states: “The repair and replacement of the windows will incur significant cost to the school, also janitorial time is being used to make safe these rooms which is greatly reducing the time they have to clean the whole school.

“We have limited time given to cleaning the buildings which is the reason we are extremely upset there has been so much damage.

“We ask that parents and carers support the school by sharing with teenagers, who frequent the grounds during holidays and after school hours, impact the way these areas are used and left after use has for younger children.

“We also ask that this message is shared widely in the local community.

“The school grounds are a community facility however, we ask that everyone using the grounds are respectful, take litter and waste away and report any damage to the school - even a note through the school door would be most helpful.

"Everyone's support with these matters would most helpful. Many thanks Melrose Primary School.”

A spokesperson for Scottish Borders Council said: “SBC were made aware of this incident over the weekend.

“The damaged windows have been boarded as an interim measure.

“The damaged windows will be replaced in the coming days before the return of the school pupils.”
