SCOTTISH Borders Council (SBC) has launched a statutory consultation over its plans for Galashiels Academy.

In May 2021 the local authority took the decision to relocate the school to a campus site within the existing boundary and on a portion of the town’s Scott Park.

But before final go-ahead is given SBC must undertake a statutory public consultation over the proposals.

In March it was revealed that preparatory works at the park would start during the consultation process.

The council admitted there was a “risk attached” to carrying out the works before final go-ahead.

A public meeting will be held on Thursday (April 20) at 6.30pm within Galashiels Academy to give the public an opportunity to provide feedback.

The consultation will run until May 12 and it can be accessed online.

Selkirkshire councillor Leagh Douglas, SBC’s executive member for education & lifelong learning, said: “Before the council proceeds with the process to build a new campus it is important that the voices in the community are heard.

“This consultation is an opportunity to express your views and opinions and we would therefore ask all interested parties to provide their feedback and come along to the public meeting on April 20.”

Planning permission for the construction of the £55 million state-of-the-art replacement school was granted last year.

Enabling works started in February with the main build scheduled to start later this year.

A variety of sporting facilities will be included, featuring a swimming pool, 2G hockey pitch, 3G rugby and football pitch, covered tennis courts and a 100m running track.

Externally, a “significant re-imagining and expansion” of Scott Park has been included, with the provision of new play park facilities, additional green space and improved connections with Gala Policies and Gala Hill woodland.

An update will be provided to councillors on the outcome of the statutory consultation in June.
