RECYCLING 'unrecyclables' has become a new mission for a Borders environmental group.

Items which aren't collected as part of kerbside recycling by Scottish Borders Council (SBC) can now be left with Sustainable Selkirk.

The group has signed up to a TerraCycle scheme which means for every unrecyclable they collect they get a donation which contributes to local sustainability initiatives in the town.

This project also means more is recycled from our homes and less waste goes to landfill.

Angela MacKellar, project coordinator of Sustainable Selkirk, said: “So far we’ve collected several kilograms of waste that would otherwise have ended up in landfill, incineration or worse.

"We will donate the funds raised to Selkirk Regeneration, a local charity that aims to benefit to the people of Selkirk and the surrounding area by being a proactive force in promoting community regeneration, environmental conservation and sustainable development towards a low-carbon future.”

Sustainable Selkirk is part of a number of recycling programmes created by well known brands, including Philips Dental Care, McVitie's Biscuits and Snacks, and Pilgrims Choice.

As part of these recycling programmes, Sustainable Selkirk can accept items such as toothbrushes and biscuit wrappers which aren't usually accepted by kerbside recycling collections.

Angela added: “We encourage everyone in the area to get involved and sort, save and bring the items we can recycle to our drop-off location.

"It’s a great way to reduce the amount of waste you send to landfill, and it also helps raise funds for a great cause.”

Items left at Sustainable Selkirk's drop-off point at 5 Tower Street, Selkirk, are then sent to TerraCycle where they are recycled.

Sustainable Selkirk earns TerraCycle points which can be redeemed as a monetary donation to be given to Selkirk Regeneration.

The Sustainable Selkirk drop-off point is open on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 10am-2pm.
