THE third and final competition in the current Peebles Camera Club season was held recently with Ron Bell LRPS of Galashiels Camera Club judging the entries. Brian Henry from Peebles Camera Club reports...

Ron was invited to judge 18 prints and 33 digital images, and he considered the standard of the digital images slightly higher than the print entries. As he was judging both categories together none of the prints obtained the top mark of 20 which was awarded to only one digital entry.

In his comments Ron said he would be firm in his marking of nature photographs as the number of entries in competitions in general was increasing and the images now need to be of very good quality. Of the 14 nature images he identified areas where whiteness was blown-out when it could have been pulled back to reveal possible detail in feathers or fur. He felt in several images there was too much negative space which should have been cropped so that the animal was larger in the frame.

Complementing the landscape images he did draw attention to the lack of a focal point in some which led the viewer to have a wandering eye, this applied particularly to a display of flowers. Ron mentioned a couple of triptych entries which were well presented and complemented across the three images. He liked the few black and white images that were entered which he said enhanced the subject.

The image that obtained the full 20 marks was Lindisfarne Castle, a digital image by Sandy Welsh. This was followed by Hellebores Triptych by Kathy Henry and Christmas Whee...l (not a record shot) by Ian Rodwell. A score of 18 was awarded to one digital image and four prints.

The overall highest scoring images were:
