A VISION for Galashiels to become the “cherry blossom capital of Scotland” has been unveiled.

Galashiels Community Council chairwoman shared her hopes at a meeting on Wednesday (May 3).

“I was speaking to somebody about the future of Galashiels,” she said. “We were talking about planting cherry trees to make Galashiels the cherry blossom capital of Scotland.

“It’s time we tried to look at something positive.”

Ms Cleghorn conceded that it would take years to achieve but that Langlee already has a number of the trees.

And she floated the idea of the area hosting a cherry blossom festival next year.

Community councillor Bill White said: “It’s fantastic out there in full blossom.”

The group’s treasurer, Richard Romeril, told the meeting that a cherry blossom festival is held at Alnwick Gardens and said it would be worth getting in touch with the organisers.

“We’ve got a year to do it as the cherry blossoms are out,” said Ms Cleghorn.
