TRIBUTES have been paid to the owner of Marchmont House who died suddenly earlier this week.

Hugo Burge, 51, was an internet entrepreneur who championed the arts after moving to Marchmont House near Greenlaw.

Marchmont House confirmed that Mr Burge had died suddenly on Wednesday, May 10.

Sharing to its Facebook page, a representative of the Borders landmark said: "It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Hugo Burge who died suddenly at home on Wednesday 10th May."

They added: "Hugo’s kindness, intelligence, curiosity and belief in a better world made him an inspiration to us all.

"He was a beloved son and a great friend.

"We will miss him terribly."

Mr Burge's family have asked for privacy, and have shared that a memorial service will be announced in due course.

In response to the news of Mr Burge's death, the Open Studios art event due to be held this weekend has been postponed.

A spokesperson from Artmag UK said: "Hugo was an inspiring friend to artists and makers through his work at Marchmont, Wasps Artists Studios, and Borders Art Fair, among others.

"He will be greatly missed by Artmag and we send our deepest sympathies to his family and the team at Marchmont House."

And a spokesperson from the Borders Art Fair added: "We are incredibly sad to hear of the death of Hugo Burge of Marchmont House.

"A Patron of the Borders Art Fair, Hugo has been a source of inspiration and encouragement to us, and to so many artists and creatives across the region.

"His support, sense of humour, kindness, patience, generosity, vision, and energy will be sorely missed.

"Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and all at Marchmont."
