BORDERS footballers are pulling their boots on one more time in honour of a local legend.

Former Gala Rovers player, manager and referee Ellis McGregor passed away last June from dementia at the age of 92.

Now his former teammates, club colleagues, friends, and family have come together to honour Ellis and raise money for the Borders Dementia Centre with a memorial football match.

“He [Ellis] was one of the nicest guys you would ever meet,” said Gary Hastie, one of the organisers of the memorial game between ex-Gala Rovers players and ex-Borders Amateurs.

Players from the former Gala Rovers and the Borders Amateurs clubs will take to the 3G arena at Netherdale on Saturday, May 20 for the charity game organised by Kevin Matheson.

Joining the ex-players, two of Ellis’s great grandchildren will make appearances on the pitch.

A raffle to help raise funds for the Borders Dementia Centre will also be held on Saturday.

The Ex-Gala Rovers and Ex-Borders Amateurs match will kick off at 5pm at the 3G arena at Netherdale on Saturday (May 20).
