RESIDENTS of a Borders village are hoping that a cardboard police officer will help motorists follow the 20mph speed limit.

Pop-up Bob will be in place for a week on Cardrona Way, near Peebles, to encourage passing drivers to reduce their speed.

Tweeddale East councillor Julie Pirone, of the Conservatives, shared to social media: “Great to see my colleague PC Bob out in Cardrona today. Slow down and watch your speed.”

A “significant” number of motorists are said to be travelling at more than 30mph.

Brian McCrow, resident and ex-chair of Cardrona Village Association, said: “Cardrona Way is part of the shared pathway from Peebles to Innerleithen and hence accommodates a lot of local and visiting cyclists and walkers.

“It is also a route used by local residents from very young to elderly as the X62 bus stop is by Nashy’s café and requires everyone to cross the roundabout coming in to Cardrona.

“Most drivers are careful drivers with average speeds between 20 and 30mph but a significant number of drivers, both local and delivery or trades vans, travel at well above 30mph and 40mph, with the occasional lunatic driving well above 40mph.

“It is those we want to influence to reduce their speeds and hence protect the lives of the young through to the elderly.

“We also want to encourage visitors as part of the development of biking tourism throughout Tweeddale.”
