ANOTHER vehicle has struck bollards shaped like giant coloured pencils on a Peebles street.

Two police cars and an ambulance attended the crash in South Parks at 8.45am last Saturday morning.

The matter was discussed at a meeting of Peebles Community Council this month.

Chairman Peter Maudsley said: “For the second time since pencil bollards have been introduced a vehicle has gone over them.

“This is the third accident in the last five years with the first being a Landrover coming to rest upside down.”

A Scottish Borders Council (SBC) spokesperson said: “Pencil bollards are made of a ferrocast material, which is polyurethane with a steel core.

“They are designed to be passively safe and collapse or crumple in some form if hit by a vehicle even at reasonably low speed.

“They are not anti-ram raid bollards, which would only usually be located in areas where there is a specific terrorist threat or at shopping centres.”

Similar pencil bollards, installed last summer, are used along the pavements outside Kingsland Primary School on the A72, on the other side of town.

The SBC spokesperson added: “The council will work with Police Scotland to determine the reason that this vehicle hit the pencil bollards and decide if any further actions are required.”
