GALASHIELS Boxing Club celebrated its 10th anniversary in front of a sell-out crowd at the Volunteer Hall on Saturday night.

The club, which started from humble beginnings in the Tweedbank Community Centre in 2013, has enjoyed the most successful season in its history and now has three champions in its ranks – Mason Maycock, School Boys Golden Gloves champion 35kg, Jack Grieve, Celtic Box Cup champion 75kg and Jack Swaney, Scottish Elite Champion 86kg.

A total of 14 bouts took place with the main event Swaney’s fight with Kaveh Aziz from East Kilbride.

Swaney entered the ring to ‘Sunshine on Leith’ from The Proclaimers but it was Aziz who had the better of the opening round.

However, the Gala boxer demonstrated the skills that won him the Scottish title and took the next two rounds to win by a split decision, to the delight of his fans.

Aqeel Aziz won the ‘Best Boxer’ award and the ‘Best Bout’ award went to Jack Grieve vs Liam Henry from D-Unit.

Grieve won the bout despite bleeding from a cut left eye following an accidental clash of heads in the first round.

Border Telegraph:

Chairman Russell Hamilton said: “Another fantastic night which just gets better and better each year. Thanks to everyone at the club for their hard work in making the show a massive success yet again and we are already looking forward to next year’s show.”

Head coach Jim Gow added: "A great night at the Volunteer Hall. The Galashiels boxers’ performances were superb, as was the turnout and the support from the town for the sell-out event.”
