STANDARD Bearer Thomas Bell will perform the ‘Casting of the Colours’ for King Charles III and Queen Camilla during their visit to Selkirk this week.

The tradition is carried out each year at the final ceremony of the Souters’ Common Riding.

Their Majesties will be in the Borders on Thursday (July 6) where they will visit the Great Tapestry of Scotland visitor centre, before heading to Selkirk.

A council spokesperson said: “Scottish Border Council is delighted to welcome King Charles III and Queen Camilla to the Royal Burgh of Selkirk on the afternoon of Thursday, July 6.

“The Lord-Lieutenant of Roxburgh, Ettrick and Lauderdale, the Duke of Buccleuch, will greet the King and Queen on arrival before showing them round Selkirk Market Place, where local traders will display local produce and services.

“Their Majesties will then view a performance of the historic ‘Casting of the Colours’ by the 2023 Selkirk Standard Bearer, Thomas Bell.”

The act commemorates the Souters who went to fight in the Battle of Flodden in 1513.
