RESIDENTS of a Galashiels care facility enjoyed a party last week to celebrate a special milestone.

The Corn Mill Court housing with care complex, on St John Street, was decorated in orange and black balloons to mark 50 years of Trust Housing Association, which runs the site.

And there was a 1973 memory board with tales of Jackie Stewart, Elton John and the famous game on New Year's Day when Hibernian beat Hearts 7-0.

The residents were treated to a sumptuous buffet of sandwiches, sausage rolls, bhajis and chicken strips, with beer and prosecco.

Then Tony Collins, aka The Tartan Cowboy, entertained everyone with his repertoire of songs and humorous tales of growing up in a ‘single end’ in Glasgow.

Tony, who had celebrated his 77th birthday the previous day, opened with ‘Tie a Yellow Ribbon round the Old Oak Tree’, followed by ‘Top of the World’ which had everyone singing along.

The first half of his show also included hits from the 50s and 60s including, ‘That’s why the Lady is a Tramp’ and ‘Singing in the Rain’.

Following a break for the raffle, Tony donned his cowboy gear and carried on with hits from Willie Nelson, Patsy Cline and, of course, the King himself, Elvis Presley.

Then at one point a country and western fan in the audience produced a Colt 45 and Tony quipped: “I didnae think I was that bad.”

Manager Julie Pearson said: “Trust Housing Association was founded in 1973 and CC opened in 1982 on the site of the old St John’s Church. In fact, many of the first residents had been married there.

“I’ve worked here for 17 years and seen a lot of changes. We are known for our events and our aim is to make staying here as enjoyable as possible for everyone.

Border Telegraph:

“This party has taken a bit of organising but it’s been a cracking day. Tony’s been excellent and you could see that everyone had a great time.”

Tony added: “I’d like to thank Julie for inviting me. I love the Scottish Borders and have a few relatives here including my sister Susan, nieces Suzanne and Michele, and great niece Ruby.

“It’s been a great day and my wife Pat and I had a great time. I think everyone enjoyed themselves. It was good to see everyone singing along, although I did get a shock when the chap pulled out the revolver.”
