A NEWLY opened restaurant represented the Borders at a Glasgow awards ceremony last month.

1953 Bar and Restaurant in Galashiels only opened four months ago, but it has already made a name for itself as one of the town's award-winning eateries.

The restaurant, on the corner of High Street and Bridge Street (formerly Braw Bear) opened its doors in May and last month found itself nominated in three categories at this year's Spice Awards.

1953 was nominated in Best Indian Restaurant, Best Indian Takeaway and Best Chef for the south of Scotland region.

From its three nominations the restaurant walked away with the winner's trophy for Best Indian Restaurant.

Navin Kandel, owner of 1953 said it was an "amazing achievement".

Himself a former chef, Navin added: "We have had really good support.

"We have a had a lot of good comments from customers.

"It's [the award] really good."

At the award ceremony at the Double Tree by Hilton Hotel in Glasgow last month Navin was joined by members of his Galashiels team.

"We all had a good time," Navin said.

1953 Bar and Restaurant is open Tuesday to Sunday, 4-10pm.

The restaurant offers meals to dine in and has a menu for takeaway orders.
