A GALASHIELS boxer put on a perfect display to defeat a Scottish light heavyweight champion in the capital on Sunday.

Jack Swaney showcased his skill to win every round against Muhammad Zakariyah in a dominant display at the Leith Victoria Boxing Club show at Tynecastle Stadium.

Swaney, who is the reigning Scottish cruiserweight champion, is now eyeing up turning professional next year.

He said: “My opponent is a Scottish champion so I had to drop a weight and fight him at his weight, but I dominated the fight and can’t complain.

“When I was offered the fight at the Leith Victoria show I couldn’t turn it down. Leith Victoria are one of the oldest clubs in Scotland with a big history. Ken Buchanan and Alex Arthur started there.

“But he (Zakariyah) wasn’t from Leith, he was from Clovenstone Boxing Club which is also in Edinburgh.

“Our fight was the co-main event and probably should have been the main bout as we are both Scottish champions, but Leith Victoria wanted one of their guys on the top of the bill which is understandable.

“Being a Hibs fan, the fact that the show was at Tynecastle meant I had to do the business.

“That’s my last fight of the year so I’ll have a good Christmas and be ready to start again next year.

“My aim is to win the Scottish cruiserweight title again to make it back-to-back titles then represent Scotland at the Tri Nations.

“After that I want to turn pro which will probably be at the end of next year. Happy days.”

Galashiels Boxing Club coach Jim Gow said: “It was an incredible performance that solidifies Jack’s position as a force to be reckoned with in boxing in Scotland.

“He was top class and kept his focus throughout the flight. Anything less and he could have been in trouble, but sharp punches and good movement made sure he didn’t lose a round which was excellent from him.”
