FIFTY new jobs would be created if a proposed £1.8m expansion of a Borders textile mill gets the green light.
A planning application has been submitted to region’s local authority to build a new 1,000ft square metre building on the current staff car park at Johnstons of Elgin at Eastfield Mills in Mansfield Road, Hawick.
The aim is that the expansion will increase the staff at the site to 330 over the next four years.
The planning bid also incorporates stone over-cladding to existing adjoining buildings.
The new building would be built on the existing 26 car parking spaces but the company has secured two new bespoke parking areas for staff next to the mill, giving 63 new spaces in total.
Additionally, the mill’s visitor centre is to retain its existing parking.
