A FORMER hair salon unit in Eyemouth is to be incorporated into a residential property after plans were rubber-stamped.

Scottish Borders Council (SBC) has granted approval for the change of use of The Salon at 1 Market Place to provide one additional bedroom for an adjacent dwelling.

The Salon recently relocated to 2 Gillsland in Eyemouth.

A supporting statement with the application says the property is within Eyemouth Conservation Area but is not listed.

The statement adds: “The internal design principle is to convert the disused redundant Salon space into an addition third bedroom for the adjoining domestic property. This will make the whole building group domestic and all controlled by the same owner.”

A report approving the application, from SBC assistant planning officer Paul Duncan, says: “There are no significant policy principle concerns arising from these proposals.

“The loss of a Class 1A unit is acceptable. The property is not within Eyemouth’s Core Activity Area, is peripheral to the core of the town centre being located up a side street, and is thought to have issues with occupancy.”

The works to the external fabric of the building will be restricted to the replacement of the existing window and entrance door onto Renton Terrace.

The report adds: “It is considered that the existing UPVC window is out of character with the rest of the building and entrance door is now at the end of its life cycle and replacing as a whole is the only practical and cost-effective way forward.

“This solution gives the opportunity to bring the whole main elevation together and also provide a robust watertight and draught proof detail to the existing openings and proposed new bedroom.”
