PUPILS at St Ronan's Primary enjoyed a visit to the Great Tapestry of Scotland in Galashiels this week.

The Primary 7 youngsters were given a talk about the iconic artwork and its history and then asked lots of questions about the project.

A spokesperson for the school said: "During the workshops, the pupils heard about the mystery of the missing panel.

"The original panel depicting the Apprentice Pillar went missing whilst the tapestry was on display in Kirkcaldy. The class then created an imaginative story using the Kirkcaldy mystery as inspiration.

"Designing a new panel was the next task – 1999 was the last piece of history shown on the tapestry. The primary 7s had the challenge of creating a new panel and deciding which Scottish event would be the most significant to depict on the new panel.

"The pupils used iPads to research, design and create a new panel.

"For the final workshop the class listened to extracts from some well know Scottish poems and had to guess which Scottish poem it was from.

"The next task was to write their own Scottish poems using the tapestry as inspiration. There were some very creative and humorous poems shared by the class."

The trip was supported by the Innerleithen, Walkerburn and Traquair Rotary Club and the Peebles Abbeyfield Trust.

The spokesperson added: "A visit to one of Scotland’s largest community projects is one that will long live with the pupils. Thank you to Denis and John from the IWTRC, Abbeyfield Trust, staff at the tapestry and the patient bus drivers. [It was] A real team effort and a fantastic experience for everyone involved."
