AS SPRING blossoms, green-fingered gardeners are preparing for the 51st annual Peebles in Bloom competition.

And now is the time to start creating stunning displays for the July judging walk rounds.

Apart from a break for the COVID lockdown in 2020 the Peebles Community Council-run event for beautiful blooming gardens, roadside displays, hanging baskets and tubs outside businesses, has been held continuously since 1972.

Peebles Community Council heard last Thursday, from Gill Macdonald, that the sub-committee is in place and the presentation evening is set for Thursday, August 15 in the Burgh Hall.

There are awards for business, community gardens, courtyard gardens, very small, small, medium, and large gardens, all year round or seasonal garden, the best street, the secret gardens normally hidden from view and of course the overall winner.

Most have trophies and three are of special note, the Alastair Stewart trophy for businesses, the W J Burnside trophy for secret gardens and the Pentland Plant trophy for the overall winner.

The garden walk rounds will start on Friday, July 12 and end on Sunday, July 20.
