A MAN who assaulted his wife has been fined £400 with a £20 victim surcharge at Jedburgh Sheriff Court.

Dominik Rakowski, 41, pleaded guilty to pushing her on the body and punching her to the head, to her injury, at their home in Hillend Drive, Hawick, on February 25.

Prosecutor Ruaridh Allison told a previous hearing that the accused and the complainer had been married for 18 years and had three adult children.

He said that at around 10.10pm the woman was in her home watching television in the living room when Rakowski returned home from visiting his mother and appeared to be under the influence of alcohol.

He fell asleep on the sofa before running to the toilet and being sick.

Later on he, called his wife a slag and said he hated her before connecting with her nose with a clenched fist. Mr Allison said the accused backed away and claimed she had caused the injury to herself.

She was able to contact one of her daughters and told her she needed to come to the house as Rakowski had “leathered her".

The daughter noted blood on her mother’s clothing with Rakowski still insisting it was a self-inflicted injury.

The daughter contacted the police and Rakowski left the house but was cautioned and charged by police on February 27 and made no reply. He told police he had accidentally hit her but later added he felt ashamed at what he had done.

The wife said she was terrified of him when he became angry.

Defence lawyer Mat Patrick said his client wanted to repair their relationship adding: "He understands his behaviour was completely unacceptable.”
