PEEBLES FC chairman Mark McCubbing has heaped praise on the club’s 2013 side after they lifted the Colin Campbell Cup.

Peebles defeated Leith Athletic Reds 2-0 in the final at Dalkeith Thistle’s King’s Park in front of a sizeable travelling crowd from the Borders.

Leith had already defeated Peebles twice in the league this season but couldn’t make it a hat-trick.

It was the perfect way to end the side’s first season in 11-a-side football with Mr McCubbing bursting with pride. He said: “We’re a relatively small team from a small town competing against side in the Edinburgh catchment area, winning cups and trophies isn’t something that happens regularly for Peebles but we hope that can change going forward. We’re all hugely proud of them.

“We’re really big on team spirit and we speak as coaches and as a committee about wanting to do everything we can to keep the lads together. It’s young kids playing with their mates, having fun and representing their hometown. That’s not something that happens that often when you get further along in careers or move up age groups.

“We view that as a big selling point for the club and the players have bought into that. The work ethic and desire is exceptional.”

He added: “We finished third in the league behind Leith Athletic and Tranent – two big teams – which is a great season. Leith actually beat us twice in the league so we weren’t going into the cup final as favourites at all but they were brilliant. The effort from every single one of them was great to see. They’re a really fit squad and they just keep going – that’s proven the difference in some games.

“They were well supported with players, coaches and parents from other age groups coming to watch as well so it felt like a real club event. Everyone is very proud.

“We want players to see that you can stay in Peebles and win things and advance your careers and this win definitely shows that.”
