THE best of brass is tuning up for a youthful concert in Hawick next week.

And there will the opportunity to chat and have a coffee with the musicians and even one of the composers.

The Hawick Music Club concert features the highly-talented Scottish Borders Youth Brass Band.

Starlight, composed by Scottish Youth Brass Band director Alan Fernie, who is based in Selkirk, will open the afternoon concert on Saturday, January 20.

The performance is an enticing mix of Scottish, Norwegian and African influences.

Fernie's compositions and arrangements are featured throughout the concert.

Other composers whose works are included in the concert programme are Jan Mayne Ford and Fredrick Schjelderup.

And Ravel's Bolero should make for a dramatic conclusion.

Vanda Mercer from Hawick Music Club told us: "This is an opportunity to enjoy conversation as well as the music of talented young brass and percussion players from all over the Borders in a café style setting.

"The audience will be seated around tables with refreshments served by the committee."

The afternoon concert begins at 2.30pm.

Tickets, priced at £8 for adults and free for under 18s, are available from Deans and Simpsons Hawick.
