ADVENTUROUS Borderers are being sought for a three-week trip to Malawi next year.

For the past 20 years, the Borders Exploration Group (BEG) has been taking young adults aged 16 and over on challenging adventures around the world.

During the team’s last trip to Bolivia in 2017, they worked to renovate a hostel for homeless boys in Cochabamba, undertook an environmental project on Lake Titicaca, and trekked through the Cordillera Real.

The group comprised of 19 young ‘venturers’ together with 10 leaders, including two medics.

The purpose of the expeditions is for the participants to build confidence, acquire new skills, develop leadership and team-working and, of course, to have some fun.

Graham Little from BEG told us: “The most important objective of all is to make a positive difference in the countries visited, making a contribution that delivers long-lasting social, educational, environmental and even commercial benefits.

“For many of the young adults involved, a BEG trip is a ‘life-changing’ experience, often resulting in new friendships and paving the way for future life challenges.

“It also reads well on a CV when applying for a job or for university entrance.”

For the team’s trip to Malawi, it is hoped that around six leaders and 14 ventures will take part.

Graham added: “The main objective of our next trip will be to work with the local community in Thondwe [which already has links with Tweeddale], in the south of Malawi, on small scale and sustainable, agricultural, educational, health and infrastructure projects.

“There will also be time for a trek in the nearby Mulanje Massif and some wildlife spotting.

“We are particularly keen to recruit a medic for this trip, I’d urge anyone interested to get in touch.

“In addition, the group will be raising funds to help deliver the local projects in Malawi. We are keen to hear from any businesses and organisations that can provide sponsorship.”

Leader recruitment for the Malwi trip has already commenced with a selection process planned for March 9 and 10.

Application forms are available from Graham Little by emailing grahamelittle@yahoo.co.uk.

Details for Malawi venturer applications will be posted on www.borders-exploration-group.org.uk in early March with a provisional selection day planned for May 5.

Individual costs are anticipated to be around £2,000 per person.
