A FASHION exhibition in Hawick is showcasing a range of outfits created by a group of talented Borders students.

The stylish creations are the work of students on the FashionABLE course and will be on display at the Borders Textile Towerhouse until May 26.

FahionABLE, which began at Burnfoot Community Hub in 2018, will be showcasing outfits made from scratch and other garments which have been purchased from charity shops and upcycled.

The FashionABLE project aims to teach new skills such as sewing, altering garments and craft work and to encourage social interaction with others.

The course was initially targeted towards 16 to 25-year-olds but has proven to be a hit with budding designers of all ages, with the current students ranging in age from 15 to 60.

Some have sewn before while others are learning to sew for the first time with the course tutors, Clair Ramage and Liz Parkes, who were previously involved with the Creative Fashion courses at Hawick and Selkirk High Schools

The course receives funding from The National Lottery Community Fund Scotland’s Young Start Fund and has also benefitted from the help and support of local textile firms in Hawick and the Scrap Store in Selkirk.

The students also participated in a photo shoot with Hawick photographer John Parris and these photos, taken at Burnfoot Hub and Hermitage Castle, will be on display throughout the exhibition.

Zilla Oddy, Museum and Gallery Assistant with local charity Live Borders, said: “We are delighted to host the first exhibition of work by students on the FashionABLE course, providing an opportunity for them to showcase their creative talents in our textile museum.”
