TWENTY EIGHT parking tickets were handed out in Galashiels town centre last Wednesday.

The figure was announced in the police report at last week’s community council meeting.

In 2013, traffic wardens were pulled from Borders streets leading to fears roads in the town centre would be chaos, but police say they will continue to patrol the area.

In the statement, Sargent Duncan Marker said: “PC McNair and I carried out a timing check on cars parked in the town centre area today (Wednesday, September 7), parking bays and loading bays.

“It was clear many motorists were adhering to the one hour restriction for parking bays, however, over the day 28 vehicles were issued with fixed penalty tickets for overstaying (many two to three hours, some all day) and for parking indiscriminately in loading bays which still appear problematic.

“We have also contacted SBC as there are some area of streets that no longer have the required parking signs in place in order for us to take action,” he added.

“Overall, we got a positive response from the community and business owners.

“We will endeavour to repeat this type of patrol again soon.”
Chief Inspector Andy McLean, local area commander for the Scottish Borders added: “On Wednesday, September 7, Community Officers in Galashiels issued 28 parking tickets while out on foot patrol in the town centre.
“The tickets were issued for a number of offences including misuse of loading bays and parking on double yellow lines offences.

“Police will continue to enforce any parking matters where vehicles are parked in an obstructive or dangerous manner, or where motorists fail to adhere to road signage.”
