FILM lovers and historians are in for a rare treat this week with the screening of Further Beyond in Hawick.

The remarkable story of Irish adventurer Ambrosio O’Higgins is beautifully told by London-based Irish filmmakers Christine Molloy and Joe Lawlor.

Further Beyond is the penultimate film in Behind the Curtain’s first season.

And it is sure to delight both fans of film and history.

Further Beyond charts the adventures of Ambrosio, First Marquis of Osorno, who departed Ireland with small ambitions and ended up as Captain General of Chile and Viceroy of Peru.

O’Higgins’ tale is but one part of this idiosyncratic work however, as the film moves through essayistic passages and dramatic imaginings, contemplating migration, photography, and critiquing the clichés of narrative filmmaking.

It is both a documentary film, and a film about making a documentary.

Also featuring a cameo by Games of Thrones’ Aidan Gillen, Further Beyond seamlessly weaves together a fascinating complete work that is somewhere between fact and fiction.

The Guardian’s Leslie Felperin said: “In an age of cookie-cutter comic-book franchises and safe-bet awards bait, this is essential viewing.”

The Behind the Curtain series started in September with Daisies at The Haining in Selkirk as part of YES Arts Festival.

Throughout the season, which has featured shorts, experimental works and a cult Canadian comedy, audiences have delighted at the opportunity to see something unusual that would ordinarily never screen in the Borders.

For the Further Beyond screening, Heritage Hub - normally the town’s archive centre - will be transformed into a cinema for the evening, where the audience can see this unique work and stick around for a chat.

Further Beyond is screened tomorrow (Thursday) in the Heritage Hub at 7pm, with doors opening at 6.30pm.

Tickets are £5 and advance booking is available at behind-thecurtain.com
