JEDBURGH is set to receive a £866,500 funding boost to make essential repairs to the town centre.

The grant is part of a £6.2m investment plan from Historic Environment Scotland, which will see seven communities benefit around the country, through round seven of the Conservation Area Regeneration Scheme.

Alex Paterson, chief executive of Historic Environment Scotland said: "The funding will enable seven more communities up and down the country to breathe new life into their historic town centres, encouraging further investment, creating new employment opportunities, and boosting the local tourism industry.

"We’ve seen how successful this approach can be in previous schemes across the UK, and I’m looking forward to seeing the results for Jedburgh.

"In Scotland’s year of History, Heritage and Archaeology we’re celebrating all the different elements which make up our rich and diverse historic environment.

"Preserving the built heritage of our town centres is a hugely important part of this, because investment in our historic environment is key to supporting improved quality of life for many people across Scotland.

"We are committed to supporting Scottish Borders Council throughout the regeneration process – not just through financial aid, but by providing expert advice and skills."

The funding comes after we reported last week that footfall in the town was down six per cent.

Councillor Stuart Bell, SBC's executive member for economic development said: "Many of our town centres are facing real challenges and we know Jedburgh has issues in terms of deteriorating buildings, increasing vacancy rates and declining footfall. So we are delighted this funding will begin to help address some of these issues and act as a catalyst for regeneration in the town.

"I would encourage local businesses and community groups to continue to work with us to make Jedburgh a really welcoming attractive destination for visitors particularly for those coming over the border."

Ward councillors Jim Brown, Rory Stewart and Sandy Scott are also "delighted" with the news.

In a joint statement they said: "We are delighted Jedburgh has been successful in gaining this vital CARS funding, which we believe will help start a turnaround in fortunes for our historic town.

"There is much work ahead, both for the council and its community partners, but it is extremely fitting that this funding has been awarded to Jedburgh in the Year of History, Heritage and Archaeology."
