SIR, It was with great interest that I read that Brian McCrow, an Innerleithen Community Councillor, had said that he was not against people cycling on the pavement.
I have noticed through the local press that Mr McCrow has always campaigned for mountain bikers as they are seen as an asset to our local economy so allowances have to be made, and now it seems the law can be bent for them to.
Well, I use the pavements of Innerleithen every single day in life and I am sick and tired of walking out of shops to step into the path of a mountain biker, or having to step off the pavement on to the road to let a mountain biker past.
I have never yet come across a road cyclist on the pavement only mountain bikers. I work in a local pub and it is almost a daily occurrence to hear people complain about the mountain bikers on the pavements.
I have absolutely no objections to children cycling on pavements but I do object to the older generation of mountain bikers going at some speed along our pavements and if they feel it is to unsafe to cycle on the road then they should get off their bikes and push them along the pavements.
Can I also point out, if they have to cycle along the pavement as it is unsafe, can I then also ride my horse on the pavement as I and all the other horse owners are also assets to our local economy as we buy/rent land, buy feeding/hay, and use farriers, all which is local we must be also be given the same privilege.
So Mr McCrow when you see us riding our horses along the pavement please remember your Highway Code and pass a horse wide and slow.
I am, etc.
Amanda Robertson Innerleithen
