The 33-year-old joiner’s first move after being appointed was to fix up Des Sutherland - who banged in a record-breaking 73 goals in one season for Gala Rovers and was a key player in the club’s Lowland League side last season - as his assistant at Netherdale.

It is a strong pairing as Gala look to challenge for honours in the Border Amateur A Division next term.

Davidson was the manager of Ancrum FC for the past five seasons during which he won a Border Amateur B Division title along with two Walls Cups and one Wright Cup.

He told the Border Telegraph: “I felt it was the next step for me. The facilities at Netherdale are superb and there is a great community spirit surrounding the club.

“As with any new job you have to find your feet and I will be taking each game as it comes.

“It is great to have Des on board. His record speaks for itself and if we keep him fit we have a great player on our hands as well as someone keen to develop his coaching skills.

“It was important for me to have someone from Gala assisting me and now I can’t wait for the season to get started.” Gala Fairydean Rovers FC chairman Kevin Temple said they were delighted to have Grant in charge of the club’s reserve side.

He added: “He is young and ambitious - just the right calibre of person we want at the club.

“We wish Grant every success in the post and are positive he will do very well.” Davidson is currently aiming towards getting his UEFA B coaching licence at Largs.

In addition to his footballing commitments, he was also the Jedburgh Callant in 2010 and is a well known figure in Borders circles.

He takes over the post from Kevin Matheson who did an excellent job steadying the ship in Amateurs’ first season when they lost a lot of players who stepped up to the club’s Lowland League side but still ended up reaching the Beveridge Cup Final.
